Layered hair styles are versatile, trendy, and sophisticated. Whether you have long or short hair, a bob or a Sedu style, or if you’re interested in a celebrity do, layers are for you. One of the most difficult things about going transitioning from a perm to natural hair and about having natural hair is finding a good hair style or styles. I’ve been through this myself and I feel your pain. Black hair does not lend itself to “down” hairstyles (as my girls used to call it) and once the days of dog ears and pig tails are over, African-American women often struggle with how to wear their hair when it does not have chemicals on it. Adding to that, during the transitional phase you’ve got two completely different textures, assuming you don’t do the “Big Chop”.
Treasured Locks polled some of our subscribers to find their favorite natural or transitional hair styles. Thanks so much to those of you who replied to help out those who might be struggling with making the leap. Whether you have long or short hair, layered hair styles can add a fun and trendy look to your locks. Layers provide texture, volume, and contemporary appeal to any style, but they’re not right for everyone.
Layers add flair to long hair styles.
Many different hair styles can incorporate layers, from bobs to bangs to teen dos. Even today’s trendy looks such as sedu hair styles can incorporate layers for flair and individuality. Not every type of hair can use layers, however. Very curly hair does not layer well, because the curls tend to tighten and disrupt the layered look, creating a scruffy appearance. Similarly, individuals who like to change their styles frequently may not want to attempt layers, because it can take years to grow out them out. The key to fabulous layered hair styles is to choose the proper types of layers and use them to their full benefit to create a stunning look.
Benefits of Adding Layers
Layered hair styles have many benefits. Adding layers can modernize an old style without too drastic of a change, and layers can be both flirty and elegant, making them appropriate for any age. Other benefits to adding layers include:
• Different layers create natural volume to hair without needing excessive chemicals.
• Layers can help heavily damaged hair by cutting off split or broken ends for a more planned look.
• Layers can be cut to balance any face shape.
• Creating layers can lighten very thick, heavy hair, allowing its natural waves to appear in medium and long styles.
• Individuals who suffer from migraines may find some relief with lighter layered styles.
Growing Out Layers
If your layers start to bore you, it may be time to grow them out. Unfortunately, the process is far longer than the quick snip of first getting layers: growing them out can take years. The best way to grow out layers is to keep the bottom layer at an unchanging length, allowing the upper layers time to catch up with it. Regular trims (every 8-12 weeks) are still necessary for all layers, since damaged hair grows unevenly, creating a more haggard style. Keeping your hair healthy is the best way to grow out layers: consistent conditioning treatments can help top layers continue to grow so the style can be changed more quickly. Many individuals choose to go from a long layered look to a medium length style as soon as their layers are long enough for that type of change.
Caring for Layered Hair Styles
Layers add texture and definition to short styles.
While many layered styles can simply be washed, dried, and worn with a minimal amount of styling, layers do need some particular care to keep looking their best. To prevent a raggedy look from taking over the style, regular trims are necessary to even out the layers, and very brittle hair may require frequent conditioning to keep from developing the fuzzy look of layered split ends.
To make layers more noticeable, many people choose to add highlights, lowlights, and other color to the layers. This not only makes them stand out, but it emphasizes the hair’s texture and structure rather than just showing the appearance of a flat, uninspired style.
Layered hair styles are appropriate and can be applied to any hair length. It will look most great in long straight hairs. Try out the layered hair style to help give your hair a great and new style rather than having a new hair cut.
